WALKING WEDNESDAY is tomorrow!!
Think about how you can get yourself to school using your own power.
Home Reading
Reading at home on a daily basis with your child, along with literacy supports at school is a wonderful way to support your child’s success. In the Home Reading bag you will find:
· 2-3 books chosen by your child at their Just Right level
· Home Reading Log to fill out as your child completes each book
· Reading Strategies
- sounding out – what do you hear first, next, etc.
- finding smaller chunks – s and h together make a different sound /sh/
- “what word do you think will make sense here?”
- taking turns reading like child reads a page then adult reads a page
- talking about what you are reading:
- “What was the problem in the story?”
- “How did they try and solve it?”, “How was it solved?”
- “Who was in the story?”
- “Where does this story mostly take place?”
- “When does this story take place?”
- “What does this remind you of?”
- “Who is the most important character? What makes you say that?”
- “How do you think the character knew how to do that?”
- “What would you do if you were the character in the story?”
The most important part of the program is a patient, encouraging and supportive attitude when reading with your child to develop confidence and a love of reading.
Halloween
Halloween is on Monday, October 31st! Students are welcome to come dressed in costumes all day! The morning will be a typical morning schedule. Please use your best judgment with costumes. No weapons at school.
We will have a small class celebration in the afternoon. The students will have activity centers some may be based on Halloween. We have 22 students in the class so if parents would like to supply one of the food items listed below, please email Angela to let her know what you can bring.
1 fruit platter
1 veggie/dip platter
1 salty snack (pretzels, chips, etc.)
1 sweet treat (cupcakes, cookies, etc)
1 meat and cheese platter with crackers
Dear Students and family members of Prince of Wales school,
Mrs. McKay’s PoWer Hour is all about giving back and helping others. The first group of people that we have chosen to help, live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used.
These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out!
Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom.
Please have all donations here by November 4, 2016

What we have done today:
- We finished off a crossword puzzle we started last week.
- We had another round of learning centers and math centers.
- We made estimations of cards in a jar and some of us had a hard time making a good estimate.
- We all got music awards this morning because we were all great listeners and singers.
- We started to watch a video on some of Canada’s symbols and how they were chosen.
- We practiced some soccer and lacrosse skills in the gym with Mrs. Heagy’s class.
- We had PoWer Hour.
Daily Challenge:
Crossword puzzles help us find new words to use like ‘colt’ for a male baby horse. What was the word we learned to use for uncontrolled fury (r_ _ _) or a word for argument (qu _ _ _ _ _ ) or a word for mistake (e _ _ o _)?
