Home Reading
Reading at home on a daily basis with your child, along with literacy supports at school is a wonderful way to support your child’s success. In the Home Reading bag you will find:
· 2-3 books chosen by your child at their Just Right level
· Home Reading Log to fill out as your child completes each book
· Reading Strategies
- sounding out – what do you hear first, next, etc.
- finding smaller chunks – s and h together make a different sound /sh/
- “what word do you think will make sense here?”
- taking turns reading like child reads a page then adult reads a page
- talking about what you are reading:
- “What was the problem in the story?”
- “How did they try and solve it?”, “How was it solved?”
- “Who was in the story?”
- “Where does this story mostly take place?”
- “When does this story take place?”
- “What does this remind you of?”
- “Who is the most important character? What makes you say that?”
- “How do you think the character knew how to do that?”
- “What would you do if you were the character in the story?”
The most important part of the program is a patient, encouraging and supportive attitude when reading with your child to develop confidence and a love of reading.

Dear Students and family members of Prince of Wales school,
Mrs. McKay’s PoWer Hour is all about giving back and helping others. The first group of people that we have chosen to help, live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used.
These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out!
Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom.
Please have all donations here by November 4, 2016

What we have done today:
- We had learning centers. (SZ)
- We had gym and we worked on our soccer skills. (ES)
- We had Make, Tell and Show in the morning and we made things that crawl. (RP)
- We did science and we did a ‘this and that’ small group discussion to listen to other people’s thoughts about what animals we are going to study in science. (GH)
- We had library. (CG)
- We had music and we listened to Peter,Peter, Pumpkin Eater. (CS)
- We had quiet reading for 10 minutes. (JW)
- We used Cuisenaire rods for a game of measurement. We had to find rods that measured as long as an orange rod and a red rod when we were given a rod to start with. (EH)
- We did a circle this morning, sharing our thoughts about what was challenging to me and what I liked about math centers.
Daily Challenge:
We finished our discussion of what crawling and flying are. We then had small group discussions about This: animals that crawl, animals that fly, and animals that crawl and fly or That: animals that crawl and fly. The students had to listen to what other people in their group had to say. Some people changed their thoughts after listening to someone else’s thoughts and ideas.
Share with your family if you chose “This” or “That” and your reasons for making that choice. You could also share if something you heard changed how you were thinking.
