Home Reading
Reading at home on a daily basis with your child, along with literacy supports at school is a wonderful way to support your child’s success. In the Home Reading bag you will find:
· 2-3 books chosen by your child at their Just Right level
· Home Reading Log to fill out as your child completes each book
· Reading Strategies
- sounding out – what do you hear first, next, etc.
- finding smaller chunks – s and h together make a different sound /sh/
- “what word do you think will make sense here?”
- taking turns reading like child reads a page then adult reads a page
- talking about what you are reading:
- “What was the problem in the story?”
- “How did they try and solve it?”, “How was it solved?”
- “Who was in the story?”
- “Where does this story mostly take place?”
- “When does this story take place?”
- “What does this remind you of?”
- “Who is the most important character? What makes you say that?”
- “How do you think the character knew how to do that?”
- “What would you do if you were the character in the story?”
Halloween
Halloween is on Monday, October 31st! Students are welcome to come dressed in costumes all day! The morning will be a typical morning schedule. Please use your best judgment with costumes. No weapons at school.
We will have a small class celebration in the afternoon. The students will have activity centers some may be based on Halloween. We now have all the snacks covered for our celebration. Thank you to those who volunteered to send our snack.
Dear Students and family members of Prince of Wales school,
Mrs. McKay’s PoWer Hour is all about giving back and helping others. The first group of people that we have chosen to help, live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used.
These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out!
Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom.
Please have all donations here by November 4, 2016
