Global Maker Day:
We celebrated this day by working on one of the challenges given to us. It took us a long time to complete this challenge. We worked on it before and after lunch.
The challenge was to create the tallest tower possible using only 5 items in the classroom.
After thinking about it and answering a few questions, there were some criteria that we had to follow: no tape or glue, could only use things that you could physically pick up by yourself, had to keep safe (use step stool not chairs), no breakable items, and at least 5 items and they could all be different.
We each made a plan in our visual journal, and then we got to share our ideas in a small group and come up with a plan. After we came up with a plan, we could create. We celebrated our failures and used them to adjust our plans and kept on creating. We did have to document our changes and why we made some changes.
Reminder that we are trying to come to school using our own power like walking, cycling, scootering, etc.
Home Reading
Reading at home on a daily basis with your child, along with literacy supports at school is a wonderful way to support your child’s success. In the Home Reading bag you will find:
· 2-3 books chosen by your child at their Just Right level
· Home Reading Log to fill out as your child completes each book
· Reading Strategies
- sounding out – what do you hear first, next, etc.
- finding smaller chunks – s and h together make a different sound /sh/
- “what word do you think will make sense here?”
- taking turns reading like child reads a page then adult reads a page
- talking about what you are reading:
- “What was the problem in the story?”
- “How did they try and solve it?”, “How was it solved?”
- “Who was in the story?”
- “Where does this story mostly take place?”
- “When does this story take place?”
- “What does this remind you of?”
- “Who is the most important character? What makes you say that?”
- “How do you think the character knew how to do that?”
- “What would you do if you were the character in the story?”
The most important part of the program is a patient, encouraging and supportive attitude when reading with your child to develop confidence and a love of reading.
Halloween
Halloween is on Monday, October 31st! Students are welcome to come dressed in costumes all day! The morning will be a typical morning schedule. Please use your best judgment with costumes. No weapons at school.
We will have a small class celebration in the afternoon. The students will have activity centers some may be based on Halloween. We now have all the snacks covered for our celebration. Thank you to those who volunteered to send our snack.
Dear Students and family members of Prince of Wales school,
Mrs. McKay’s PoWer Hour is all about giving back and helping others. The first group of people that we have chosen to help, live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used.
These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out!
Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom.
Please have all donations here by November 4, 2016
