A huge THANK YOU to Stephanie, Dale, Greg, Andy, and Jenn for volunteering for our field trip. We would not have been able to do this without you.. You made our class enjoy the Field trip so much more.
Home Reading
Reading at home on a daily basis with your child, along with literacy supports at school is a wonderful way to support your child’s success. In the Home Reading bag you will find:
· 2-3 books chosen by your child at their Just Right level
· Home Reading Log to fill out as your child completes each book
· Reading Strategies
- sounding out – what do you hear first, next, etc.
- finding smaller chunks – s and h together make a different sound /sh/
- “what word do you think will make sense here?”
- taking turns reading like child reads a page then adult reads a page
- talking about what you are reading:
- “What was the problem in the story?”
- “How did they try and solve it?”, “How was it solved?”
- “Who was in the story?”
- “Where does this story mostly take place?”
- “When does this story take place?”
- “What does this remind you of?”
- “Who is the most important character? What makes you say that?”
- “How do you think the character knew how to do that?”
- “What would you do if you were the character in the story?”
The most important part of the program is a patient, encouraging and supportive attitude when reading with your child to develop confidence and a love of reading.
Halloween
Halloween is on Monday, October 31st! Students are welcome to come dressed in costumes all day! The morning will be a typical morning schedule. Please use your best judgment with costumes. No weapons at school.
We will have a small class celebration in the afternoon. The students will have activity centers some may be based on Halloween. We now have all the snacks covered for our celebration. Thank you to those who volunteered to send our snack.

What we have done today:
- We did a play of some of the people that helped make Calgary a community. We met the Livingstons (14 children and they started the first school), Wares (farmer and the beginning of the rodeo), some cowboys, NWMP, a prisoner, CPR employees, a doctor, nurses, their patient, and a reporter. Part of this story actually happened in Calgary’s past. (IH)
- We practiced being NWMP and wearing their uniforms and hats. (CG)
- We had scavenger hunt in the museum. (JW)
- We learned about what the prairie looked like before Calgary was built. (GH)
- We got to dress up as Blackfoot, Settler women and men, NWMP, missionaries, and cowboys. (EH)
- We got to touch old artifacts.
- We got to go see where the Elbow and the Bow rivers meet.
Daily Challenge:
Look at the pictures and share with your family some of the things you saw, heard, felt, and learned while at Fort Calgary.
