We have discussed a little bit about Orange Shirt Day. We talked about how there was a group of people who wanted to help educate aboriginal people by taking their children to missions. We discussed how some of the children might have felt being taken from their parents. The students understood that this was not the best way to help educate the children. We watched a video on the Orange Shirt Day website. http://www.orangeshirtday.org/
We also listened to a story called, “When I was 8”. This was a story about a young girl who went to a residential school and her experiences there. We also talked about her determination to learn to read. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSBrkJn3NeI
We will continue this discussion for the next couple of days.
SPARK
This is a morning activity that starts at 7:45 until 8:00 in the gym. Everyone is welcome to come and join in.
Dr. John Ratey is a leading researcher in the area of the brain and exercise. He believes that, “Regular exercise can raise levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, and improve functioning of brain systems that regulate impulse, memory and attention.” Additionally information from his website states that, "adding exercise to your lifestyle sparks your brain function to improve learning on three levels: First, it improves your mind's alertness, attention, mood and motivation. Second, it prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information. Third, it spurs the development of new nerve cells in the hippocampus."
Library
Our library time will be on Tuesday afternoons. The students will be able to take out one or two books. One of them should be at a just right reading level. Some only took out one book until they get into the routine of being responsible for the library books.
